Invention series (2022 and 2023)
These prints turn type into image, inspired by the abstract beauty of the Hebrew letter. They include phrases about printing included in colophons of early Hebrew printed books – poetic phrases such as “in one instant the ink flows over me” and “great invention,” referring to the invention of printing.
I recently acquired a piece of letterpress equipment originally used to print text on an angle and have been using it in a nontraditional, experimental way. Similar to the action of the children's toy Spirograph, this tool, the angle chase, creates a hypnotically circular letterpress-printed image. The forms (arrangements of type to be printed) are created from metal and wood types, along with other decorative typographic printing material. In each print, the circular printing element is rotated 24 times for one color (48 times for two), so a single sheet of paper goes through the press dozens of times for one print.
